frequently asked questions
What demands must my sleeping bag fulfil?
The filling is the hidden quality in the sleeping bag. Although invisible, a good filling is essential for the quality and performance of the sleeping bag. The filling of a sleeping bag consists of fibres with air in between them. This air is heated by the body. The filling has the function of retaining the warm air. Several years ago, the notion was that a thick filling had the most still air and was consequently warmer than a thinner filling. Due to the current technical developments, it is no longer the thickness (the volume) that determines the insulation of the sleeping bag but the structure of the filling and the fibres used.
As an active traveller, a sleeping bag with a combination of maximum heat insulation, light weight and small packing volume is very important to you. The filling must therefore fulfil a number of demands:
- Optimal reflection and retention of bodily heat
- Easy to compress into a cover
- Great resilience
- Damp may not affect the insulation capacity
- Suppleness such that the sleeping bag conforms well to the body
- anti-allergenic
- easily washable
